More app changes being considered

I’m currently reviewing two more apps for use in AwaOS, namely the most lightweight standards compliant web browser available, Midori, and yet another music player called “Eina”.

Midori has always been on my list of apps to consider for inclusion, but because of GUI issues (I really don’t like the side pane) I had tentatively chosen Epiphany with all its Gnome dependencies instead as a “best of the worst” solution. However, the most recent version of Midori, 0.2.8, is several releases newer than the one available in the Ubuntu Lucid repositories (0.2.2) and has some significant improvements, the details of which can be check out on the Midori website. Most important to me is the default appearance on installation which looks much nicer than 0.2.2 did:

Also, and I’m not sure when it was added, but there is now a plugin to configure the tool bar, which I have done to add a zoom feature for older users, and remove the one to open the side bar I can’t stand and some other bits. This looks great!

Midori 0.2.8 can be installed by using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:midori/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install midori

Next, just when I thought I’d found the perfect music player app, I found another light weight app under active development and available on Launchpad, namely “Eina“. This app has a lot of neat features such as automatically displaying CD jackets and last.fm info, but without the GUI clutter of an “i-tunes replacement”. I’m still on the fence about which GUI is better, and added to the equation are machine performance and user habits. Looks like this will take some time and polling to iron out.

Eina is also available in a PPA on launchpad:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eina/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install eina-player
