PC Self Sufficiency Project

The PC Self Sufficiency Project is part of the AwaOS project and aims to help my community in rural Japan become self sufficient in computing equipment.

Obviously to most, this does not mean that we will manufacture PCs and computer chips down here in the woods and rice fields. Rather, the project aims to make the best possible use of existing and donated old PC hardware, rather than letting it go to waste.

Many members of the community have never used a PC but are feeling increasingly pressured to do so, whether for their children’s education, or to communicate with peers. Others own PCs that which, while physically operational, run outdated operating systems which makes them feel a need to purchase new hardware even though they may not be able to afford it.

By combining this project, the collection of used and donated hardware for refurbishment (swapping parts, reformatting hard disks, etc.), with AwaOS, designed specifically to run well on such old hardware, I hope to improve the overall computing infrastructure for the community.

More information will be added here as the project progresses. Currently, I am at the hardware collection stage.
